Imagine unknowingly having someone tamper with your belongings. To most it would seem unimaginable unthinkable even. For University of Hartford freshman Chennel Rowe this is her reality.
Rowe took to social media to share a cringe worthy story. Rowe began to experience throat pain that she believed to be associated with an on coming cold. After three weeks time the throat pain progressed without her getting an actual cold. ” Three and a half weeks in I had extreme throat pain to the point I couldn’t sleep. To the point I couldn’t speak. I would try to whisper and I could barely whisper.”
Rowe shortly after went to the student health clinic where she had three test administered and was offered antibiotics. Rowe expressed not wanting to spend another night in pain and decided to take the prescribed antibiotics prior to getting her results. She later found out that the three test came back negative.”Nobody knows whats wrong with me they just know that there is a bad bacteria in my throat causing me pain.”
In the video she expressed that she felt unwanted in her own room. “I felt like a ghost” said Rowe in reference to her room-mate Brianna Brochu. Rowe described her room-mate as disrespectful and petty. ” If I’m doing my work she would come into the room and turn the light out” said Rowe. Unbeknown to Rowe she was doing far more than disturbing her study time.
While moving out she was approached by an RA and her old neighbor who showed her a snap chat from her room-mate. The post laid out in detail what exactly was making her sick. “Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons on her backpack, putting her tooth-brush places where the sun doesn’t shine, and so much more I can finally say Goodbye to Jamaican Barby [Chennel Rowe]”
Chennel stated that she tried to do things properly she went to public safety and filled out reports and a non communication agreement ( between her and her roommate). She said several times during the Facebook live video that nothing could move forward in her case until public safety finished they’re investigation.
Rowe believed that the school was taking their time processing her case. She believed that they might be trying to swept under the rug. One of Rowe’s motivations for taking to social media was to insure that she did not become another statistic.
Before going live on Facebook she was threatened by the school that if she talked about what happened she would be removed from campus housing. ” The fact that I’m black and my old roommate was white. If the roles were switched I want to know if it would be handled the same way because I damn well know it wouldn’t! I damn well know it wouldn’t!)
On Saturday Brochu was arrested by West Hartford Police. According to the New York Post Brochu admitted to licking Rowe’s plate, fork, and spoon, as well as smearing blood on Rowe’s book bag. However, Brochu denied everything else that she mentioned on Instagram claiming it was just to appear funny.
Brochu has since been expelled from the University and charged with criminal mischief, and breach of peace and more recently intimidation based on bigotry has been added to the list of charges. Afro Frenzy stands with Chennel Jazzy Rowe in her quest for Justice and will continue to follow the story as new developments unfold. Remember, be happy, be curly, be you, and you will never fail!
